A Screencappin' Fool ...

Been doing a bit of gallery maintenance recently -- adding screen caps to some of the "darker" corners of my gallery. I managed to find and add caps and episode information for Mahou Tsukai Tai a couple of days ago. And today, I finished up working on Weiss Kreuz Gluhen. Considering how much I love Weiss, you wouldn't think Gluhen would be a "dark" corner around here. But, even though I like it, that show makes me sad. Which means it's tough to sit through the whole thing -- even if it is only 13 episodes long. The deed is done now, though. So ... yay?

I really like the feeling of accomplishment that comes with finally being able to look at a gallery section and realize that I've gotten all the information in there, with the relevant screen caps, too. It's such a "behind the scenes" kind of thing, and I know it's not as awesome as adding a new piece of art to my gallery. But still, I find it to be a lot of fun. Of course, it's a bit of a double-edged sword, as a "completed" section won't stay that way forever. As I add new things, I eventually get to the point where, particularly with some sections (I'm looking at you, Saiyuki!), I, once again, have a TON of difficult screen capping ahead of me. But I guess the hunt is still fun, in a way. Plus, it's always a kick to re-watch favorite animes.

I'm never sure about adding episode information, though. I don't know how much is "too much". I like to try and give visitors (if they read the commentary) a bit of background or a sense of the scene or episode where the cel or sketch is located. So I think I err on the side of providing too much info. This becomes painfully clear when I look at how long some of the episode "summaries" end up being! Ah well ... I figure people can just skip it if it's too long. Right?

I have the same problem about giving too much info on my cels. xD I often feel like I write too much but it''s just so much fun that I can''t help but word vomit about why I love my collection. (I mean, we''re all spending tons of money on paint and plastic for some reason. Least we could do is give reason for our insanity. :D) Like you said, if someone thinks there''s too much to read, they can always skip it. IMO I love it when I view an interesting cel and there''s a huge paragraph of writing to go along with it instead of a blank space. Makes it more fun to see what the owner is like and why they like that piece. =)

I am so bad when it comes to screen-capping my cels. Or really writing anything worth reading about them in the commentary. For awhile I made a concerted effort, but I''ve totally fallen off that wagon.

90sKid: I agree! It is fun to ramble along about a cel. I think I''m the same way in that I tend to give lots of commentary because I enjoy reading it in other galleries, too. Especially when I don''t know much about a cel or scene or show ... it helps me appreciate a pretty piece of art even more to know why it is special to the owner.

@Rei: I don''t think that''s true! I like your comments. But I can also see how it would be hard to do commentary, particularly if you''re super busy or don''t like writing. It can be a time suck -- as can the screen capping and episode info. Maybe I should consider myself lucky that I enjoy that stuff. *nervous laugh*

@teggacat: Awww! Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better about writing so much. LOL!

I figure some of the series we collect (both of us, and each individually) are so relatively little known that they can use a little TLC in presentation. Then the gallery becomes a place people can go for information and links, rather than just a Smaug Wallow for the collector''s vanity. Which it is too, of course, but how else does one know how precious the cels and sketches we''ve obtained truly are.

Tex and Rei have both been models for my own practice, and -- yes -- I''m sure my descriptions are often skipped, though I do my darnedest to make this difficult to do. Looking forward to your new visually enhanced gallery!

Thanks, Sensei! I''m flattered to find out that my gallery has been a model for yours in any way. You know how much I love visiting your little corner of RS and learning lots of incredible stuff while I''m there. I agree, too: quite a few of the shows that we each collect aren''t as well known. Yet even more reason to get as much screen capping done as possible. I''ve already updated the Weiss Gluhen section with the new caps. Now that I have that show pulled out into its own spot of the gallery, though, I am planning on doing a bit of extra research on it to add into the show description. That will be a bit longer coming, though. Thanks again -- as always -- for the words of encouragement!
