Is it wrong to buy cels from a series you haven't seen?
last modified: Saturday, January 28, 2006 (10:00:32 PM)
I've recently received some.. less than happy comments on a board devoted to an anime I haven't seen. I want to see it, and I will, so I joined all happy and bubbly.
Then I got angry comments when I posted my cel, with the arguement that I am "ruining something sacred" by buying something like a cel from such an amazing anime I don't know, and thus don't appreciate on the level they do. I'm not saying where this was, as I'm sure my biting sarcastic comments back will have me banned and I don't need to cause any more trouble.
I can understand that the anger is.. well.. justified in a way, but I never intended to offend them in the way that I did.
Do you think it's wrong to buy a cel from a series you never seen? A popular series that most everyone considers a classic and the holy grail of anime? I mean it's not like I'm going to use the cel as buttwipe or something! It's going to be put in a cel bag like all my other beauties.. I'm just upset by all this. Cels go pretty fast, but the anime will be on DVD forever. ._.

I honestly don''t think it''s wrong to buy cels form a show you haven''t seen. It just feels like those people might have been a little jealous that you got the cel. I mean if someone got a major wishlist cel that I wanted and then never saw the show.... I just might be a little sore about it XD

However, cels are art and we should enjoy them for that simple fact. I''ve seen some really beautiful cels that I thought about getting even though I never saw the show.

Try not to be too upset. Maybe they will eventually come to realize that the way they acted was wrong.

Anyone who gets upset at someone for buying a cel from a show they haven''t seen has issues, to put it mildly. ;) It IS helpful to have seen the show in question if you are going to be buying many cels from it, but it surely isn''t a requirement.

Screw ''em dude. I''ve brought some cels from a anime series I had never seen, but I got the cels because they interested me, then I went and saw the series.
Seriously though, it''s probable that they might be jealous, or they are totally stuck up jerks.
You aren''t ruining anything. You cel collecting is a hobby, and one of the many enjoyments from cel collecting is about buying cels that interest you, be it from a series you have, or haven''t seen.

I have bought many cels from animes I haven''t seen. You are buying the cels to appreciate the art and not just the story. I agree with the above posts about being jealous. Enjoy what you got!

That''s just ridiculous. Those people are either very elitist, or they''re just jealous that you have a cel from this great series and they don''t. I think it''s safe to say that a large portion of cel collectors have cels from things they''ve never seen. Hell, how many galleries just here at RS have an "unknown" section? There''s nothing wrong with buying art you can''t trace the origin of so long as you appreciate the art, period. That''s what cel collecting is all about, art appreciation. If those stuck-ups at that forum are so cranky that they can''t get that basic fundamental, then you don''t need to be wasting your time over there anyway. They''re being childish, bottom line, and you shouldn''t feel any guilt whatsoever for having the cel you do.

Let them whine about it, They just want the nice cel you have and can''t stand the fact you got it.
Send me the link to this forum and I''ll tell them what I thank about anime snobs and wave a few hundred cels at them from shows I have never seen but have lots of cels from, I buy my cels for me and noone else because I like the art on them, I could care less about what some of those types of folks think and I think you should do the same,If you like it buy it for your enjoyment and your investment, As you said cels go fast once they hit the market so grab them up if you can before someone else does.
You will find in many fields of collecting some folks that think they have a right or a power of some type to tell others what to do and I have found these types of folks do not last long in there fields because they are cutting off the people that someday will supply there collection with new items,I think the saying "to cut off your nose to spite your face" applys to these folks.
So don''t let them worry you to much and try to not give them a second thought.
By the way what show is it from, It sounds like a killer cel I would love to see!!!!
Keep up the good job of finding cels you like and remember to enjoy the art for what it is!
Roy

Don''t worry about it, and you aren''t alone. I''ve purchased cels from an anime I havent seen (Unico: Special Chapter) and spent good $$money$$ on them too! The anime wasn''t released to VHS or DVD, and buying the cels is just part of appreciating the artwork. If someone *really* loves a cel that much, enough to whine and cause you stress about it, then they should have purchased it themselves. ^_^

I had the same questions when I thought about buying cels of a show that I''d never heard of, let alone seen before. I felt like I was "cheating" but no one else was going for them, so I took ''em. Like you said, it''s not like we''re going to use them for toilet paper or dart practice. Like Leedz said, how many ''Unknown'' sections do us RubberSluggers have in our gallery? I have one that I bought because I thought it was really beautiful, but I have no idea which show it came from.
People like the ones you mentioned need to get a life and leave you alone. Sheesh... *rolls eyes*

We''ve had this quandry before, in somone else''s blog...
It''s only wrong if YOU think it''s wrong.
Period. ^_^

No! It''s not "wrong". There isn''t any "right" or "wrong" cel to purchase. Period.
The only thing "wrong" may be the way I''ve fallen in love with Ichigo Kurosaki..... <.<
I bought my E''s Otherwise genga without even knowing the character''s name. Had to go gallery surfing to find it. I''ve also got a couple of Maze cels. Never seen the show.
Big whoopdedoop.
Buy what you like, and the rest can go hang.

Hey Sletia, sorry to hear about this ONE person who offended you, I''ve contacted him directly about his message(s) because his conduct was out of order.
For anyone else reading this, the forum in question is and always has been a nice place, but 1 person out of the 300+ members made a nasty comment which won''t be tolerated.

That person isn''t an art collector and doesn''t see where you''re coming from on your collecting interest. Don''t take it to heart *hugs*.

We all have as much right as the next person to buy cels from anime we haven''t seen. In fact, we might love it more because we''re willing to spend $$ compared to the people who only watch it free on the TV/internet ;)
