Unexpected... last modified: Sunday, February 25, 2007 (7:22:07 PM) I made my initial gallery banner back before I even opened the gallery and really, before I even had more than a couple of cels. The images there were a sort of wishlist, not all of them were sparkly-eyed dreamers. LOL
This week I finally got a Kodocha cel (why is it so hard to find them, to say nothing of -nice- ones), but looking at my gallery, I thought that some of these unexpected ones weren't represented, so they've been added. :) -Hajime no Ippo: Boxing? -BOXING-? What did you say? The most I knew about boxing was that the man who made the grill in my kitchen was once one. But Kizu showed it to me last fall and I was hooked! I found that I didn't have to be all into boxing to enjoy the story and the characters. -You're Under Arrest - I've known about this title for a long time, and dismissed it as one of those fanservice shows that hold no appeal to me. But again a big thanks to Kizu, it's a long favorite of hers and I found out how delightfully wacky and sometimes -sweet- the series is, despite how it may have been marketed. It shows me that first impressions are sometimes wrong! -Millennium Actress - Besides HNI, the largest collection I have, and one that's -dear- to me. I bought the DVD almost as an afterthought during the fall DDD sale, then when I watched it... wow. It's a moving story and has beautiful art and the visuals of Chiyoko's quest for love across Japanese history... well it makes for a very addictive collecting quest. Of course, the rest in my banner on my wishlist are there to find and add one day... but sometimes in this hobby it's really the unexpected that sneaks up and surprises you. :)
Ah you know… Sometimes it happens like that. When I was contemplating on what to collect, I had a pretty good idea of what series I wanted… Some of them materialized and some didn’t. Like for example, I’ve been wanting to collect from Fushigi Yuugi because I really did like it back in 98 (I think) but it turns out what I’m required to shell out for it wouldn’t make me happy at all. I guess part of the reason is, because it’s been a while I don’t really get excited about it that much anymore. Of course if I saw a cel that was nice and at the right price for me then I’d probably go for it just to have some artwork from the show. Now take for example Daimos, it’s been a long –long- time since I’ve seen that show and it’s only my second favorite from Tadao (Sure I’d like to get more of Voltes but they hardly appear even on YJ) and yet I collect a lot from it. Why? Well the cels are available somewhat (still quite rare though) and I’m happy with the prices. Whether anyone likes it or not, or if it’s known or not, doesn’t seem to affect my enjoyment of it. Buying doesn’t make me feel all guilty or anything, unlike FY. Then there’s the case of Kenshin cels, to be honest I think RK cels are horrendously priced at times, and although I feel guilty in indulging, I feel very satisfied with what I get. So I think it’s not just how much you like an anime… Availability, pricing and even maybe how popular it is affects the collecting enjoyment. Then of course, there’s the in-betweeners, cels I buy because I can and I liked the show or they fulfill a certain “requirement”. I don’t buy a lot of them, I want to keep them to the bare minimum… I don’t know if that’s a success or not yet. Anyway I’m glad you liked Ippo and YUA. Ippo is a fun series but since it’s boxing/sports I think people just pass over it. As for YUA to be honest I only watched YUA because I like the idea of women police and Saito used to work in that station. Not that Saitou used to work there even remotely make
(continued) sense… LOL. Also I’m glad you liked Satoshi Kon’s works. Would I be correct if I guessed that the reason you checked out MA is not just for the Shinsengumi appearance but because you also liked Paranoia Agent? After all we’ve known for years now that the Shinsengumi had a cameo there. *grins* Either way goodluck to you. Try not to go as insane as I did. *chuckles* And ummm remember someone’s complaining that you got the kiddies first. Hehehe… Personally I think though for that one cel you want in your gallery, I think that’s turning in the way of “want but don’t”, because I think there are a couple of options to acquire it. I guess what I’m trying to say is… If you really want something you have to look for it and sometimes not the usual ways instead of just waiting for it to appear. Because the people who look in the back alleys would’ve gotten them first already. In short make the unexpected, expected. Just my .02. |
